🧠 What happens when intellect becomes the monster?

🧠 When curiosity kills you?

🧠 When your obsession is the sharpest blade?

Brains Before Blood is a first-of-its-kind nerd horror anthology from Nerd Horror Media—a publisher dedicated to celebrating the dark side of intellect, obsession, and fandom. In this collection, the protagonists and villains aren’t soldiers, slashers, or scream queens. They’re coders, collectors, researchers, dreamers, and fanatics whose brains are both their superpower and their doom.

We’ve defined a genre—Nerd Horror—and now we’re inviting you to help us bring it to life.

The crowdfunding campaign for Brains Before Blood launches at 8:00 AM on Tuesday June, 24, 2025.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT?

While traditional horror often celebrates brute strength, survival instinct,
or sheer luck, nerd horror asks something different:

🕷️ What happens when your passion consumes you?

🕷️ What happens when your knowledge crosses a line?

🕷️ What happens when the thing you love the most becomes the thing
that destroys you?

This is horror for the overthinkers, the overachievers, the curious, and the
obsessed. It’s Revenge of the Nerds, but make it horrifically terrifying.

We’ll be opening submissions to the public as soon our Kickstarter funds, which will be sometime in late June or early July. Authors can scroll down to read the submission guidelines.

We’ve also have a number of authors who’ve already been invited to join the Brains Before Blood anthology. We’ve announced two of those authors so far, and we’ll be announcing more authors soon.

Pedro Iniguez is a horror and sci-fi writer from Los Angeles, California. He is a Bram Stoker Award and Rhysling Award finalist and a Best of the Net and Pushcart Prize nominee. His horror fiction collection, FEVER DREAMS OF A PARASITE, is slated for a 2025 release from publisher Raw Dog Screaming Press.

Tamika is author of Unshod, Cackling, and Naked (Unnerving Books), which is the 2024 Next Generation Indie Book Awards WINNER for Horror. Publishers Weekly call the book “powerful,” “unsettling,” and “terrifying.” Tamika also has producer credits at Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, as well as at NBC and ABC News

Your backing will ensure that every contributor to Brains Before Blood gets
paid fairly for their brilliant, unsettling work.

About the Theme

Brains Before Blood celebrates horror stories where the defining characteristic of the protagonist, antagonist, or both is their intelligence, passion, or obsessive curiosity—not brute force or physical dominance. These are stories where the mind is the weapon, the obsession is the undoing, or knowledge itself becomes the monster.

We define nerd horror as horror born from intellectual pursuits, obsessive fandoms, academic or technical expertise, or the consequences of using one's brain to engage with forces beyond human control. Think programmers who accidentally create sentient algorithms, cryptozoologists who actually find what they’re hunting, gamers who unlock cursed content, collectors whose rarest item bites back, or hobbyists whose DIY projects go horribly wrong.

We aren’t looking for traditional monster stories, slashers, or horror that relies primarily on physical strength, violence, or brute survival. Those things can be elements of your story, but this is horror for thinkers, dreamers, inventors, and overachievers—where knowledge is both power and the source of terror.

Story Requirements

  • Length: 2,000 to 6,000 words

  • Original, unpublished fiction only

  • Clear connection to the nerd horror theme (see definition above)

  • All horror subgenres are welcome: psychological, cosmic, sci-fi, slasher, body horror, horror comedy, folk horror, ghost stories, tech horror, occult, paranormal and cryptozoology horror, etc.

  • Stories should center on characters whose minds, obsessions, or intellectual pursuits are key to the horror

  • Subtle or overt social commentary is welcome, but not required

  • Diverse characters, cultures, and perspectives encouraged

What We’re Not Looking For

  • Pure action or gore with no intellectual hook

  • Generic monster-of-the-week stories

  • Violence or shock for its own sake

  • Erotica for its own sake

  • Stories that punch down or perpetuate harmful stereotypes

Compensation & Rights

  • 2 cents per word USD plus a contributor copy of the EPUB and full-color illustrated hardcover edition.

    • Note: Increases to the per word rate are tied to our crowdfunder success and stretch goals. Our goal is to get the author pay rate up to 8 cents per word.

  • Rights Requested:

    • Exclusive worldwide print and digital rights for one year

    • Nonexclusive audio

    • Name, image, and likeness
(for the purposes of marketing the anthology only)
